How to be Successful in E-commerce
Most Affiliate Programs are a waste of time and effort.  Why?  The primary reason is that the underlying business is not viable.  This is well proven by the fact that so many E-commerce ventures have gone out of business in the past year.  The entrepreneurs who started them saw E-commerce as subject to new set of rules.  That was the big mistake.  There is nothing new about E-commerce.  It is nothing more than the old tried-and-true mail order business that’s been around for hundreds of years.  The only substantial difference is the advertising media.  Rather than mailing a printed catalog, E-commerce companies publish their electronic catalog on the internet.

The most successful mail order company in history was the Sears Roebuck Company.  Over a century ago, It‘s founders recognized that the mid-west was filled with hundreds of thousands of farm families who needed a great many products and couldn't get them.  If there was a local general store, then it may have carried a few items, but offered an extremely limited selection.  Sears strived to provide these families with a convenient way to purchase a wide variety of merchandise, such as clothes, kitchen utensils, farm implements, tools and many other things.  By doing it, Sears filled a very real need and was enormously successful.

The typical E-commerce entrepreneur strived to sell stereos, televisions, cameras, clothes and other things in direct competition with local retail businesses.  Some promised very large commissions to affiliates, but to support such high commissions, they had to sell the products for high prices.  It just didn’t work.
The American consumer is a wise shopper.  If he (or she) is going to make a major purchase, then he will visit all the local stores and see what’s available, both in terms of product selection and prices.  He may use the Internet to check manufacturer’ sites to find out about product features and he may visit those maintained by national stores to compare prices.   But generally, he doesn't buy such things off the Internet.  He purchase them locally.  Most E-commerce stores didn't sell anything so their Affiliates never earned any commissions.
