Success Stories - Banners & Buttons

    Sample - Banner

The Banner has become a staple of the Internet.  They are miniature advertisements which companies place to attract people to their website.  Banners are an importance source of income to the search engines, such as Alta Vista, Web-Crawler, Excite, Yahoo, MSN, etc.
The E-commerce industry identifies two types of banners.  Run-of-Site banners are randomly placed anywhere.  They are generally used for products and services that have universal appeal.  Examples include discount telephone rates and travel services.  Targeted banners are displayed when predefined subjects are searched.  For example, if you search for "Nikon Camera" chances are that a banner from a photography store will be displayed.  All the banners used by our affiliates can be considered targeted because they are generally applicable to the site on which they are displayed. We classify banners as Blind, Generic, Specific and Hybrid.

Sample - Blind Blind banner provides no indication as to where they lead.
Sample - Einsteins Emporium A Generic banner for our main store.  It simply identifies a broad range of merchandise.
Sample - Anatomical Models A Specific banner clearly defines a specific type of product.
Sample - Anatomy-Resources Hybrid Banner contain both generic and hybrid elements
Sample - Buttons  Buttons are small banners.  Generally they contain nothing more than the subject.

Effectiveness

Two years ago, a typical run-of-site banner campaign averaged a click-through rate of about 1.5%.  An exceptionally effective one might realize a 2.5% rate.  Since then Internet users have built up a resistance and tend to ignore them.  Today the same campaign may realize a click-through of half what it did before.   Targeted banners tend to be more effective.
Keep in mind in reading our examples, we don't go by click-through rate, but rather by referral rate.  If you have not yet read our definitions page, we recommend you do so before proceeding.

Success Stories

An On-line Guide to Educational Resources
This is a popular site used by a great many teachers.  It runs generic banners that link to our main store Einsteins-Emporium.com because of the broad range of it's educational products. This site has about 30,000 Visitors per month. but they are confronted with a multitude of banners and links.  With all this competition for the Visitor's attention, the referral rate is low, generally about 1%.  Conversion runs about 3% and average sale is in the $55.00 range.  Commission to this site runs about $40.00 per month, which we consider very low.
Trade Association Affiliate
One of our affiliates is a trade association involved in the medical profession.  It's charter prevents it from selling products, but it's members often asked where they could find anatomical models.  It runs banners for our Anatomy-Resources site because it wanted to limit content to that which was appropriate for its members.  It has a small number of unique visitors each month, generally about 8,000.  The referral rate consistently runs about 3% and conversion runs in the area of 7%   However most of our anatomical models are in the $300-$1,200 range.  The average order from this small site is $325.00.  Monthly commissions generally run around $400.00.  The Trade Association applies the money to an educational fund.
The average sale figure cited above is not technically correct.  Several months ago, one of it's referrals purchased three of our real human skeletons.  It was a $10,000 sale.  (The commission was $700)  As that one sale grossly distorts the number, we did not include when calculating the average sale.
